HAAPIFest is proud to partner with Tokyo X to present an exclusive series of in-person screenings at Houston’s NRG Center, spotlighting powerful cinematic works by and about the Asian diaspora. These films reflect memory, migration, cultural identity, and resilience — from the streets of Tokyo to communities across North America and Southeast Asia.

  • Nostalgia for Tokyo
    Director: Haruka Motohashi | ⏱️ 10 min
    A poetic, 35mm reflection on a daughter’s return to Tokyo and her complex relationship with her mother.

    Director: Josephine Green Zhang | ⏱️ 20 min
    A half-Japanese woman’s tea ceremony date spirals into a confrontation with fetishization, identity, and self-perception.

  • Torque
    Director: Ahmed Ali | ⏱️ 14 min
    Dive into Malaysia’s underground mod car scene in this high-octane documentary about style, speed, and freedom.

  • Import Models
    Director: James Chung | ⏱️ 11 min
    A dive into the history and legacy of Asian American women who helped shape Import Car culture. Following three generations, the film explores the beauty, struggle, and impact of modeling across decades.

  • Director: Kelyn Ikegami | ⏱️ 87 min
    A Japanese American high school baseball team in 1987 chases a legendary winning streak in this heartwarming, underdog sports drama based on true events.

  • Director: Tadashi Nakamura | ⏱️ 93 min
    An emotional documentary from filmmaker Tadashi Nakamura about his father, Robert A. Nakamura, a pioneer of Asian American media, facing dementia and reflecting on life, legacy, and love.
