SPORT DOCUMENTARY | ENGLISH | 87 MINS

The Houston Herricanes were a part of the first women's full tackle football league in the 1970s. Their unknown story is one of commitment, courage, and strength. Despite adversity and hardship, they fielded a team purely for the love of the game. What they started is a movement that is still in motion today.

  • Olivia Kuan

    Director

Olivia began her career in her early years at NYU's Tisch School of the Arts. She has excelled as a cinematographer ever since. To date, she has shot over 30 narrative features and 5 documentary features. Olivia's recent years have been filled with new adventures. She spent a year working on the front lines managing a Covid testing and vaccination site in an underserved area. She directed her first scripted film that sold to Lifetime in 2022. And most importantly, for the past several years she has been working on her own documentary project, The Herricanes.

“This film is very personal to me. I grew up in a reality where women played football. Little did I know that most people did not grow up in that same reality. This film tells the story of my mom's pro football team from the 1970s, The Houston Herricanes. It's a love story about the bond that was forged between women, who would have never met otherwise, as they accomplished something that no one had before. In exploring the past, I began to wonder about the present. Today, nearly 50 years later, women's football is still in its infancy. What does it mean when the number one sport in America is only visibly played by men?”
